Art Education

The MAT in Art Education at Converse is a minimum of 45 graduate credit hours in art education, studio art, art history, general education, and psychology and includes intensive practical clinical and classroom experiences. The program is designed to prepare the graduate student who is seeking initial teacher certification through coursework and experiences pertaining to teaching Pre-K-12 art students. The program employs the artist/researcher/teacher model to ensure best practices in art education are demonstrated.

The student will be able to:

1. demonstrate competencies in art production and art history;
2. demonstrate competencies in art education by advancing through the education component benchmarks;
3. articulate verbal and written mastery of understanding artistic styles and principles; and
4. model the professional components of the field of art education.

*Students who do not have a traditional studio art degree will need to take art area courses on the undergraduate level prior to admission to the MAT in Art Education to make up any deficiencies. Please contact the program coordinator, Dr. Susanne Gunter, to review transcripts and determine needs, if any.

Assessments

1. Unit Work Samples, Teacher Reflective Statements, and additional components of SAFE-T.
2. Studio art portfolio of Graduate Exhibition.

Applicants must have the following:

• Graduation from an accredited college;
• Overall GPA of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale for full admission;
• A major undergraduate program appropriate for the requested teaching area;
• Official transcripts from all colleges attended

For consideration of admission, the applicant should have the following credentials:

• A completed online application, including the $40 application fee
• Official degree-granting undergraduate transcript and graduate transcripts from all colleges attended.
• Two letters of recommendation
• MAT in Art Education applicants must submit a digital portfolio of 10-15 works along with a listing of works/media, an artist statement, and schedule an interview with the Program Coordinator for Art Education prior to admission.
• A personal statement – Converse’s founder, Dexter Edgar Converse, held the ideal that Converse students “may be enabled to see clearly, decide wisely, and to act justly.” Please write a personal statement, approximately 250-300 words in length, on how your personal goals as an educator tie with the Converse concept of The “Ideal” Educator. In keeping with the Honor Tradition at Converse, your essay must be entirely your own work. Please be specific on how Converse can help you become the “Ideal” Educator, taking special care to organize your essay clearly and proofread your work. The personal statement should be submitted as a part of the application or emailed to the Office of Graduate Admissions.
